Historic, but not famous

Charles F. Durant, balloonist

In 1830, the first American aeronaut, Charles F. Durant , completed his first balloon flight – from Castle Garden in Battery Park at the lower tip of Manhattan to Perth Amboy, N.J., 25 miles. He made 13 balloon flights between 1830 and 1840 before his bride got him to keep both feet on the ground. He died in 1873.

President Andrew Jackson and about 100,000 other spectators came to see his first historic ride.
